An exotic looking pea relative with vibrant unbranching inflorescences, densely covered with vibrant purple/pink flowers. A beautiful ornamental widespread in tropical Asia and Australasia but can be grown elsewhere as an annual or when given winter protection.
The Asian foxtail small herbaceous shrub, nicknamed fox tail or cat tail because of its long inflorescences covered with small hairs, comes to us from tropical Asia and Australasia.
Uraria crinita grows on the edges of clearings and in meadows, and offers us its magnificent clusters of violet flowers. It is excellent for soils, and can regenerate poor soil through its nitrogen-fixing root system, or as a green manure if buried after flowering, when it releases the nitrogen and minerals it has stored.
Uraria crinita is excellent for humans too, with properties ranging from healing power to fever reducer and cough relief!
Space-saving, Uraria crinita will find its place in your flower beds if your winters are not frosty, as well as in your interiors and verandas.

~ Uraria Crinita Grow and Care Instructions ~
Uraria crinita from seed, you must break its hard outer dormancy, plant it in warm soil, and maintain consistent moisture. Once established, it requires minimal intervention beyond proper watering and frost protection.
Follow these steps to germinate Uraria crinita seeds successfully:
- Scarification: Nick the seed coat gently with sandpaper.
- Soaking: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
- Sowing: Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix.
- Temperature: Keep the soil at 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Moisture: Cover the tray with plastic to retain humidity.
- Germination: Sprouting typically occurs within 2 to 4 weeks.
- Transplanting: Move seedlings to individual pots after true leaves appear.
Keep your established plant thriving with these maintenance practices:
- Watering: Drench thoroughly, then let the topsoil dry out completely.
- Pruning: Cut back spent flower spikes to encourage new blooms.
- Overwintering: Bring pots indoors before the first autumn frost.
- Repotting: Move to a larger container every spring if root-bound.
- Pest Control: Inspect regularly for spider mites and aphids.
- Disease Prevention: Water at the base to prevent leaf fungus.
